We have this week been checking the new standard for all of our up and coming installation now that BS 5839-1:2013 has now been replaced and the new and improved BS 5839-1:2017
The BS 5839 provides recommendations for the planning, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in and around non-domestic premises.
The 2017 version takes into account the changes to other safety standards including the BS EN 54 series of standards for fire detection and fire alarm systems and BS 9999 for fire safety in commercial buildings. These changes will also reduce confusion in the marketplace around how to implement the recommendations given in BS 5839-1.
It is recommended that all manual call points are fitted with a protective cover to reduce the chance of malicious or false activation. Fitting of covers will no longer be regarded as a “variation” to the Code of Practice and the “variation” will be not fitting covers.
There is no longer a requirement to provide double pole isolation adjacent to control equipment and power supply units but means of safe isolation for maintenance purposes must be provided.
Additional guidance on the selection and application of fire detection, including a new annex.
Changes include. Installed heights of detectors.
